Part 46 & Part 48

New miner and annual refresher training for surface nonmetal operations (Part 46) and for surface mines and surface areas of underground mines (Part 48). Underground training is not offered.

Training Records

Certificates of training (MSHA Form 5000-23) issued for every miner who completes a course.

MSHA Part 46 & Part 48 Training

New Miner Training (24 Hours)

Part 46: at least 24 hours, 4 of them before a new miner starts work (30 CFR 46.5). Part 48 surface: 24 hours (30 CFR 48.25). Covers miners' rights, hazard recognition, emergency procedures, and the health and safety aspects of the job.

Annual Refresher (8 Hours)

At least 8 hours every 12 months. Stay compliant. Don't wait until the last month—schedule in advance.

Part 46 = surface nonmetal (sand, gravel, stone, clay, etc.). Part 48 = coal, underground, or surface areas of underground mines. Learn more.
